Why We Created This
There are a lot of supposed solutions out there for micro-business and startups. They all claim to be affordable, and they all claim to let you get a site "fast and easy". But they invariably have a nasty backlash, which is not obvious to people who are not trained in web technology. Most solutions hide their flaws well, until it comes to actual performance. Then they do badly, and the site owner never quite understands why.
Part of the reason they perform badly is because most solutions are created with the SELLER'S needs in mind, more than the site owner's needs. And really, most sellers do not believe there IS a way to provide a worthwhile solution to someone who has such a limited budget. We know better though, and we keep exploring new ways to provide real value, to give true quality, and to make sure that the needs of the site owner really are served in all that we do.
I've been intrigued by the idea of replicated websites and website builders for a long time. First of all because I needed a "bread and butter" product, because I DO have to make a living, but more than that - I wanted a way to help other people who do not have extensive web design skills, to be able to quickly and easily get a website that can help them earn. Not without any kind of investment - I do not believe in "easy money" or "something for nothing" schemes - but with types of work that were simplified, and an amount of work that was smaller so that they would be able to actually DO it. It seemed that my need, my skills, and the needs of others were a ready made situation for a creative solution.
But both Replicated Websites, and online Web Builders fail to deliver a solid value to the buyer. The problems are deep, and finding a way to keep things simple, while overcoming the specific problems, has been a complex issue.
Web builders do not allow enough flexibility to create a truly unique site. No matter what you do to them, they always LOOK like a canned website.
Search engines do not index replicated sites. You can still buy one and make it work, but you have to DO a lot of work, and you have to learn how to use HTML editing software. You have to go through the site, page by page, and make it unique - change filenames, change page titles, create or change commentary on each page, insure that there are not exactly the same articles in your site as in other sites (by deleting ones you don't like, and adding in some others), etc. It IS a time saver over making your own site, but it is still very complicated, and involves some technical skills that many people will not learn well.
After I had an opportunity to review Dave's Cool Little Website, and seeing all the barriers it presented to actually being able to earn from it, we took a look at the types of sites we were building for our clients. It occurred to us that if we looked for an intermediate solution - one that offered a lot of flexibility, but which required the site owner to do a little of the easy work, and with which we provided detailed and simplified instructions for what they needed to do, we could produce a rapid website that was NOT duplicate content, that was not a replicated site, but which still had the benefits of speed that people wanted, while being completely unique.
We'd have to figure out a fair pricing structure that allowed the site owner to get a great deal, but we'd still have to charge enough to make it worth our while - because we would do more customization work. I knew that many people who needed it would not be able to afford the price we'd have to charge - because with micro-business, and shoestring startups, even a perfectly reasonable price can often be unaffordable. So we also decided to produce a "Do It Yourself" version, where YOU do all the installation and customization, and where you can build the site yourself with good instructions to do it.
The price is a little higher than many of the "instant" packages out there, but then, the value is higher too. The Installed packages require quite a bit of time from us (because we install it and customize it for you), and even the Do It Yourself kits come with very good support after the sale. We list "2 Months email support", but it is not like if you have problems 6 months later, that we'll tell you to go away - our business policy has ALWAYS been to answer email questions promptly and courteously, and without charge. If you'd rather call, we'll be happy to talk to you - and the phone will be answered by someone who speaks English, and passed to someone who knows how to help you! Of course, it MAY be answered by a child, who has to go get Mom, but it will get you the help you need!
Our initial goal was to develop a system which met the following goals:
- It had to be easy enough to do without having to learn HTML coding.
- It had to be fast enough for a new site owner to get a functional site - so they could do it within a week if they put in 2 hours a day at it.
- It had to produce a totally unique site.
- It had to include truly effective (low cost or free) Marketing Instructions, and Maintenance Instructions.
- It had to include exceptional support.
- It had to have the ability for a person to choose a topic they would just love, and for them to personalize the presentation of that topic.
- It had to have the flexibility to allow link exchange options, and to hold your own ads so you can promote and sell whatever you want to.
- It had to allow for unlimited expansion, and unlimited business growth options.
- It had to be workable by someone who was just learning how to write for the web.
- It had to allow for good Search Engine Optimization so you could get good traffic.
- It had to be priced low enough that a serious person with limited resources could still afford it.
This system does all that, and more. There is no nasty backlash, and the site has no built-in roadblocks to success.
